Chapter Five

The Deer And The Wolf

Luckily, the shock didn’t override years of training: by the time her senses were fully restored, she found herself behind the cover of her car.

Bright red blood spilled out over her arm and stained her white blouse. With no idea where the shot even came from, she kept her eyes keen on her surroundings as she got a grip on her breathing. She clenched her teeth for the piercing pain of torn flesh that surfaced in her upper arm.

To her left, the photographer laid face down in the dirt. Through the back window, she finally laid eyes on the source of the gunshot: a seventh ghoul emerged from behind the van with a smoking gun elevated in her pale hand.

“Angela,” one of them pronounced strangely. “Come out and play, Angela. Better yet, why don’t you tell us your real name? Mrs. FBI agent?”

Jay ducked beneath the window as she observed the skull face approach.

“The big man’s going to like you.”

Her left arm was increasingly difficult to move. And yet, she spun on her heels with a firmly extended right arm and pulled the trigger the instant the barrel landed on her pursuer. There was a delayed explosion and instead of coming from her gun, it resonated from the darkening sky above.

She swung back behind cover as daunting laughter approached. She painfully dragged her other hand over to pull back the body—empty. The stinging realization that whoever ransacked her room, had, in fact, discovered her weapon after all, dampened the pain of her gunshot wound.

She could hear the muscular man turn the corner where she left a pool of fresh blood.

“Give it up, woman! You can’t hide from ghosts.”

She closed her eyes and listened to the sound of crunching rocks beneath his step.

“You’re no ghosts,” she shouted as she landed a swift blow to his stomach. “You're just a couple of losers in costume.” She delivered the finishing move to the groin and watched the large man fall.

But the other freaks were quick to follow. She knew one against six was odds even her training could not prepare her for. The only thing she could do now was retreat into the tree line.

She held her bleeding shoulder along the way as she maneuvered in and out of trees, the group of her white-faced pursuers hooting and hollering like savages close behind her.

While their advantage lied in numbers, she derived hers from her sheer stubbornness to survive. Ever since that day when she was dumped on the lone street in the middle of nowhere, she learned to survive in the wilderness. Weeks went by and that little 12-year-old wasn’t so little anymore by the time she returned to civilization.

Flashes of those slaughtered, dolled-up women accompanied her as she ran. Her will to fight that fate exceeded any other desire. Pure survivalism rapidly kicked in, and she wasn’t about to let them take her. Her resolution remained firm: she wasn’t going out like that—as the doll in someone else’s playhouse.
